The Broncos had 70 seconds on the game clock, 60 yards to traverse, one timeout remaining and a six-point deficit on the scoreboard. Just what Peyton Manning wanted.
Toward the end of practice, the Broncos put Manning into that scenario against their first-team defense, and he responded with an eight-play, 60-yard march that concluded in a 1-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Stokley with four seconds to spare.
This was the first time that the Broncos worked in a game-condition two-minute drill on practice, and Manning looked as cool as ever. After three incompletions, he found Stokley for a 26-yard connection on fourth-and-10, then hit Demaryius Thomas deep up the left sideline past cornerback Tracy Porter, gaining 33 yards to the defense's 1-yard-line and setting up the touchdown.
"Impressive -- and it's just making us better," said S Mike Adams, a part of the first-team defense that couldn't make a fourth-down stop and eventually allowed the touchdown.
"We have to make those calls and get it out quick, because Peyton, he gets the offense going," Adams continued, snapping his fingers. "Once he gets it going, you don't have time to make that call and there's a problem."
But Manning's understudies didn't come close to matching his success. Caleb Hanie ran the second-team offense against the No. 2 defense and threw a drive-ending interception after only advancing the unit nine yards; he went 1-for-6 and was also sacked by rookie defensive end Derek Wolfe. Adam Weber ran the No. 3 offense and moved it 32 yards to the defense's 28-yard-line before time ran out.
Rookie Brock Osweiler was not given the chance to run the two-minute drill Wednesday as the Broncos rotate their backup quarterbacks behind Manning.
