We're approaching the slowest part of the NFL offseason. The draft is behind us, and only OTAs remain until the six weeks or so of a football-less summer gives way to training camps in late July. It's also the time when fans all share something they tenuously hold onto once the actual football begins: hope.

There is no class distinction in May and June. All teams are created equal, all have a legitimate claim to the next Lombardi Trophy -- except, of course, they don't. But that's the coping mechanism we all use to get through this part of the calendar. Hope also explains how, for the last two months, the NFL's top-selling jerseys belong to four players who have yet to take a snap with their respective teams: Peyton Manning, Tim Tebow, Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck. At No. 5, finally, we see a name that we can envision in his game-day uniform if only because, you know, he's donned it on an actual game day: Eli Manning.


The results are hardly surprising for the reasons cited above. In the face of great odds and irrefutable truths, fans have hope that this will be the year their team finally figures things out and makes a Super Bowl run. Well, that and our country's unhealthy obsession with Tebow.
