Some linebackers move inside out. Some move outside in. Ty Powell has done both.
But Powell, who has performed both outside and in with Seattle and Buffalo, will be strictly handling the latter with the Bills in 2015.
Rex Ryan sees Powell as second on the depth chart behind Preston Brown. But he has impressed the coach.
"The first guy I'll talk about will be Powell," Ryan told the team website. "He's been most impressive to me. Smart, picks things up quick. He was more of a special teams guy, and quite honestly if he doesn't play a snap that's fine with me. That means Preston Brown is fine, but I like Powell. I think he's really jumped up."
Powell is certainly not complaining about playing inside full-time.
"Last year I played (middle linebacker), and this year I'm playing 'mike' but it's in a new scheme," he said. "They had this scheme my first year here but now I'm inside. I really just refer to Nigel (Bradham) because Nigel has been inside on this defense. I'm just learning off him. But I do feel like this is my natural position."
