Police in Texas are investigating Cowboys defensive back C.J. Spillman for sexual assault, a police spokesman told the New York Daily News.
According to authorities in Grapevine, Texas, Spillman is being investigated for an incident that allegedly took place at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center. The report was filed on Sept. 20, according to USA Today.
"We have a sexual assault report we are investigating at this time, and it does involve C.J. Spillman," police spokesman Sgt. Robert Eberling said. "He is involved in the investigation. We are looking into the matter. Any investigation involving a sexual assault does take some time. At this point, there has not been any arrests or formal charges have been filed or anything like that. But we're continuing to investigate."
Eberling told the Associated Press that the alleged incident took place in the early morning hours of Sept. 20. The Gaylord Texan Resort is the Cowboys team hotel. The team was headed to St. Louis on Sept. 20 for a Sept. 21 game against the Rams.
Attorney Gloria Allred sent a letter to the NFL on Sept. 26 saying that she represents the woman whom Spillman is accused of sexually assaulting.
In the letter, Allred noted that Spillman was interviewed by police on Sept. 20 and then allowed to play against the Rams.
"We have asked the NFL whether or not this alleged rape was reported to them and if they approved this accused individual’s playing in the game notwithstanding the allegations that had been made against him," Allred wrote in the letter.
Spillman has only been with the Cowboys since Sept. 1. According to ESPN, the Gaylord Texan Resort is also used as a residence for some new players while they apartment hunt, a group that includes Spillman.
Before signing with Dallas, Spillman spent four seasons in San Francisco and one-and-a-half seasons in San Diego.
