The Arizona Cardinals were written off, ignored, forgotten. That's what a 58-0 loss will do for a team.
But on Sunday, one week after being dismantled by the Seattle Seahawks, the Cardinals won their first game since Week 4. That's what a game against Detroit will do for a team.
The Cardinals (5-9) dominated the Lions 38-10 at University of Phoenix Stadium, snapping a nine-game losing streak and, for the time being, erasing the memory of the worst loss in team history.
Arizona flummoxed the Lions (4-10) by frustrating Matt Stafford, intercepting him twice and holding him to a sub-50 completion percentage (24 of 50) and 246 yards. They also sacked him twice.
That was enough to make up for yet another subpar performance at the quarterback position, as Arizona rookie Ryan Lindley finished with just 104 passing yards and an interception.
When the game turned: Early in the second quarter, Detroit reached the scoreboard first on a Mikel Leshoure touchdown run. Arizona's ensuing drive stalled at its own 36-yard line, but Cardinals punter Dave Zastudil boomed a punt to Lions returner Stefan Logan. Logan fumbled, Michael Adams scooped it up, and a play later, Beanie Wells rushed it in for a 5-yard touchdown. Less than six minutes later, another turnover hurt Detroit, as Patrick Peterson intercepted Stafford and returned it to the Lions' 2-yard line. That set up a 1-yard Wells touchdown run two plays later. Less three minutes after that, Rashad Johnson intercepted Stafford, this time returning it for a 53-yard touchdown, and once more, the baffled Lions were left to pick up the shattered pieces.
Highlight moments: Johnson's interception return for touchdown was pretty, but Greg Toler's was a thing of beauty. Toler returned a Stafford pass 102 yards for a score with just more than five minutes left in the fourth quarter, putting the Cardinals up by 21 and essentially ending any shot that woeful Detroit once had. ... Similarly, Wells' first two scores were nice and tidy, but his 31-yard touchdown jaunt with 3:39 left in the game was something special.
Top-shelf performances:
- Cardinals RB Beanie Wells -- 17 carries, 67 yards, 3 touchdowns
- Lions WR Calvin Johnson -- 10 catches, 121 yards
- Cardinals DE Calais Campbell -- 10 tackles, 1 sack, 1 TFL, 1 PBU
- Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson -- 7 tackles, 1 interception, 2 PBU
What they said:
(All quotes from AZCardinals.com's Darren Urban)
- S Adrian Wilson, through tears, on the redemption of a win after such a tough loss: “A lot of the emotions that are coming out now are just thinking through the hard times and being where we’re at now. ... We had to bounce back from what we did last week.”
-
DE Calais Campbell on the performance coming later than expected: “I think we played the game we’ve been looking for all season."
- DT Darnell Dockett on recovering quickly from the brutal loss: “One game, one accident, one thing that happens doesn’t define who you are. All week, I kept saying to (defensive coordinator) Ray (Horton), ‘Let us go, go eat, go eat.’ He did that, had a great game plan, and we executed.”
Numbers you should know: Despite the loss, Detroit out-gained Arizona 312-196. ... The Lions had 228 yards passing to Arizona's 97, but both teams averaged 4.4 yards per pass. ... Stafford completed passes to nine different receivers, but more than half went to Johnson. ... Peterson's interception was his seventh of the season.
Going forward: Cardinals -- Arizona closes the season with two difficult matchups, first hosting Chicago before closing the season at San Francisco. Lions -- Detroit plays Atlanta next Saturday, then closes the season against the Bears.
