The Eagles have won three games this season and in each one they had to put on a scoring drive in the final minutes, including Sunday night’s 19-17 victory over the New York Giants at Lincoln Financial Field.

The Eagles scored the game-winning points on a 26-yard field goal by Alex Henery, his fourth field goal of the night, and then had to hold off a furious last-minute charge by the Giants that included a wild and wooly ending.

Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes missed a 54-yard field goal attempt with 10 seconds left to play, but Eagles coach Andy Reid called a timeout right before the snap, giving Tynes another chance. But he missed that one, too, and the Eagles (3-1) had sole possession of first place in the NFC East, at least until Monday night when the Dallas Cowboys (2-1) play the Chicago Bears.

When the game turned: The Eagles were clinging to a 13-10 lead early in the fourth quarter, but the Giants were knocking on the door with a first-and-goal on the Eagles’ 10-yard line. QB Eli Manning tried to pass to Martellus Bennett in the end zone, but Eagles CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie intercepted it for the only turnover of the game. If the Giants had scored a TD then, the outcome would probably have been different.

Highlight moments: Eagles WR DeSean Jackson’s 19-yard TD catch, when he turned CB Corey Webster around. … The 41-yard reception by Giants WR Domenik Hixon where he beat Pro Bowl CB Nnamdi-Asomugha. … The two –count ‘em, two – missed FG attempts by the Giants’ Lawrence Tynes.

Top-shelf performances:

  • Eagles RB LeSean McCoy rushed for 123 yards on 23 carries.

  • Eagles WR DeSean Jackson had six receptions for 99 yards, including a 32-yarder and a 19-yard TD.

  • The Giants’ David Wilson returned five kickoffs 222 yards, an impressive average of 35.8 yards per return.

  • Giants WR Victor Cruz burned the Eagles again, for nine catches and 109 yards.

What they said about the crazy ending:

  • Giants coach Tom Coughlin, on not trying another play before Tynes’ two missed FGs: “I was worried we’d make some kind of play in bounds and not have enough time to clock the ball.’’

  • Giants K Tynes on two missed FGs that would have won the game: “It’s a kick I’ve hit before to win a game.”

  • Eagles coach Andy Reid on whether he regretted calling timeout before Tynes’ first miss: “When you’re surrounded by 66,000 people that probably want to rip your throat out – yeah.”

Numbers you should know: The 222 kickoff return yards by the Giants were the most an Andy Reid Eagles team has ever given up. … Eagles RB McCoy rushed for 123 yards on 23 carries and the Eagles are now 10-1 when he has 20-plus carries. … The Eagles outgained the Giants on the ground in the second half 172-31.

Injury update: Giants S Kenny Phillips left in first quarter with knee sprain and did not return. … Eagles CB Nnamdi Asomugha left in the second quarter with an eye injury, but returned late in the third quarter. … The Giants played without their top receiver, Hakeem Nicks (foot, knee), and the Eagles were without two starters, both out with sore hamstrings – T King Dunlap and LB Akeem Jordan.

Going forward: Giants – Next week, they get what passes for a breather in the NFL when they play the 0-4 Cleveland Browns at home. But then they have a tough game on the road at San Francisco against a 49ers team that will be out for revenge after losing to the Giants 20-17 in overtime in last year’s NFC Championship Game. Then the Giants have back-to-back games against their other NFC East rivals, the Redskins and Cowboys. Eagles – They hit the road next week for an intrastate game against the tough Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by two more games against 2011 playoff teams, the Lions and Falcons. The Eagles do get a little bit of a break, as their bye week rolls around after the Detroit game.
