The Green Bay Packers gave their fans an early Christmas present on Sunday. The points were plentiful and the defense stingy as they feasted on the overmatched Tennessee Titans, 55-7, at Lambeau Field.

With a balanced blend of run and pass, Green Bay’s offense was virtually unstoppable. QB Aaron Rodgers threw three touchdown passes and the Packers (11-4) rushed for four more. The defense ravaged the Titans backfield, sacking QB Jake Locker seven times and holding RB Chris Johnson to just 28 yards. Meanwhile, the special teams decisively won the field-position battle and beleaguered K Mason Crosby even made both of his field goal attempts.

The Packers offense, which had fallen to 13th in the NFL in scoring (24.6 points per game entering Sunday), put up more points on Sunday than it had in any game since 1983, and it was their largest margin of victory since a 52-3 win over the Saints in 2005.

"That's the way we want to play," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said.

The Titans (5-10) were never in the game. They didn’t score a point until less than two minutes remained in the game. Under nonstop duress, Locker was indecisive and inaccurate, and the Packers’ opportunistic defense intercepted him twice.

Green Bay played near perfectly, committing just one penalty (late in the fourth quarter) and no turnovers.

When the game turned: It’s tempting to say at the coin toss or the opening kickoff, but Green Bay’s bludgeoning did not begin immediately. The Packers were up 14-0 late in the first quarter when the defense intercepted Locker on back-to-back possessions. First, CB Sam Shields intercepted a deep throw intended for WR Kenny Britt. On the Titans' next series, OLB Erik Walden picked off a deflected pass and returned it 20 yards to the Tennessee 14, leading to a Crosby field goal that put Green Bay up 17-0. The takeaways squelched any chance at an early Titans comeback and helped Green Bay’s offense put on the rout.

Highlight moments: Always eager to show off his wheels, Rodgers ran in for a 6-yard TD to cap Green Bay’s first scoring drive, a 56-yard march that opened the floodgates. … You won’t see many better-thrown balls than the Packers’ second TD, when Rodgers rolled to his right and fired a laser beam 20 yards to WR Randall Cobb. One of the best at throwing on the run, Rodgers delivered the pinpoint pass perfectly in Cobb’s stride and just out of reach of a Titans defender. … Crosby’s second field goal, a 48-yarder, was as dramatic as ever, bouncing in off the right upright and allowing him to break his streak of eight straight games with a missed field goal. The way his season’s been going, that’s a highlight. … For the Titans, there was Locker’s 39-yard pass to a wide-open Britt down the left sideline, which set up their lone score late in the fourth quarter.

Top-shelf performances:

  • Packers QB Aaron Rodgers: 27 of 38 for 342 yards (which tied his season high) with three TDs and no INTs for a passer rating of 125.1.

     
  • Packers RB Ryan Grant: In just his third game since being re-signed by the team, Grant carried 20 times for a game-high 80 yards (long of 18) and scored two fourth-quarter TDs.

     
  • Packers WR James Jones: Seven catches for 100 yards (long of 27) and one TD, giving him an NFL-high 13 scores.

     
  • Packers ILB A.J. Hawk: Seven tackles, three QB hits and three tackles for loss, including two sacks, for the linebacker not known as a pass rusher.

  • Packers coach Mike McCarthy: “That’s the way we want our offense to look and that’s the way we want to play. I thought we had very good tempo and play selection at the line of scrimmage. It is important for us to go out and dominate opponents late in the year.”

     
  • Packers QB Aaron Rodgers: “We have added a little bit more balance. We have run the ball for over 100 yards for a few weeks in a row now. Today, we had more opportunities to throw the ball down the field because of the number of guys in the box.”

Each game presents its own challenges, and it’s not going to be like that, but we feel like every time we take the field we should score every time we get the ball.”

     
  • Titans S Jordan Babineaux: “(The Packers) are a really good football team, and they are a playoff team for a reason. Their quarterback is what makes their offense go, and they have some good players at the skill positions. They had success staying on the field and we didn’t.”

Numbers you should know: Packers -- The 55 points scored were tied for third-most in a game in franchise history and were the most by the Packers since they recorded the same number against Tampa Bay on Oct. 2, 1983 (55-14). … Their 460 total yards were a season high. … WR/returner Randall Cobb’s 14-yard punt return in the first quarter broke Ahman Green’s single-season franchise record for all-purpose yards (2,250 in 2003). Cobb finished the game with 2,342. … Green Bay’s four rushing touchdowns Sunday were one fewer than the five they had accumulated in total the rest of the season. … They were six for seven in the red zone. … The seven sacks matched a season high. … Titans -- Locker had a passer rating of 0.0 at halftime.

Injury update: Packers -- Cobb (ankle) and CB Davon House (shoulder) left the game and did not return. The Packers did not have any more information on either player after the game. Titans -- WR Damian Williams (foot), TE Craig Stevens (concussion), LB Will Witherspoon (rib) and S Jordan Babineaux (quad) were all injured during the game.

Going forward: Packers -- Green Bay wraps up the regular season at Minnesota next week in a rematch of its Week 13 victory, when Vikings RB Adrian Peterson rushed for 210 yards in vain. The Vikings won on Sunday, so their playoff hopes are very much alive and they will be amped up to beat their archrival. The Packers still have a shot at the No. 2 seed in the NFC, so they will have their foot on the gas as well. Titans -- Tennessee closes its disappointing 2012 season with a home game against Jacksonville.
