It seemed like WR Gerell Robinson and QB Adam Weber were pegged for practice-squad stays with the Broncos. But as Saturday's business closed, both had moved on from Denver -- to the practice squads of Arizona and Tampa Bay, respectively.
The Broncos had been interested in bringing back Weber for a second season on their practice squad, and kept one slot open for him when they announced their seven other practice-squad additions Saturday. But Weber chose to join Tampa Bay's practice squad, opting to join a team that only had two quarterbacks (Josh Freeman and Dan Orlovsky) on its 53-man roster, and offered more practice snaps than the Broncos could with Peyton Manning, Caleb Hanie and Brock Osweiler.
"It seems like a better situation when it comes to numbers," Weber told The Denver Post.
Robinson had the advantage of previous experience with Osweiler during their years together at Arizona State, but Denver instead opted to retain WR Greg Orton on its practice squad. Orton spent the last five weeks of the 2011 season there, and the former Arena Football League standout might have sealed his place with the Broncos with a leaping grab of a 45-yard pass from Weber in the final minute Thursday at Arizona, setting up a Matt Prater field goal that won the game 16-13 and mercifully avoided overtime.
Robinson shared the news on his Twitter account:
The Broncos now have one practice-squad spot vacant. The rest of the practice squad beyond Orton is comprised of RB Jeremiah Johnson, OL Wayne Tribue, TE Cornelius Ingram, DTs Ben Garland and Sealver Siliga and S Duke Ihenacho.
