Tennessee Titans quarterbacks Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker were felled by a flurry of dropped passes in Monday's practice.
Titans' receivers had four drops on catchable passes in a span of 16 pass attempts during an 11-on-11 drill. Midway through the drill, TE Taylor Thompson dropped a pass from Hasselbeck on an intermediate route across the middle. On the next play, Hasselbeck put too much mustard on a short pass to Chris Johnson in the left flat. Johnson was unable to haul in a one-handed grab. Both drops on Locker attempts came courtesy of WR Marc Mariani.
The third-year receiver dropped a Locker pass on a crossing route across the middle and another on a short pass Locker threw on the run. For the third straight day, the Titans took the field without wide receivers Kenny Britt (knee) and Kendall Wright (holdout). Tennessee lost another top wideout when Lavelle Hawkins hurt his foot early in practice. It left the Titans thin at receiver in their three-wide sets.
Coach Mike Munchak pointed to several other factors for the dropped catches.
“It's hot, we just practiced last night and guys get a little tired,” Munchak said. “I think that's why balls start dropping.”
CB Ryan Mouton didn't bite on a pump fake by Hasselbeck late in practice and made a leaping interception on a deep pass intended for WR Nate Washington. Locker, meanwhile, was nearly intercepted on an intermediate pass in Washington's direction. SS Jordan Babineaux had a clear path to the end zone for a pick-six but the pass fell through his hands.
