Veteran WR Plaxico Burress is out of a job and reportedly lobbying for a shot with the Raiders, among other teams.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen said he’s “absolutely” happy with the group of WRs he has in camp, but he didn’t close the door on Burress -- or any other free agent.
“I’ll say this. We’re going to look at any options that are out there that we think we can make us better,” Allen said after practice Friday. “Whether or not we make any moves or not, that’s to be determined, but we’re not going to rule anything out.”
Burress had 45 catches for 612 yards and eight touchdowns last season for the Jets. For his 10-year NFL career with the Steelers, Giants and Jets, he has 550 catches for 8,457 yards and 63 TDs. He missed the 2009 and 2010 seasons while serving a prison sentence for violating a gun law in New York.
Former Raiders QB Rich Gannon, who interviewed Burress on his Sirius radio show earlier this week, tweeted: “Get the sense our guy Plex could wind up in OAK. Likes the idea of pairing with Carson Palmer, “who throws the deep ball as well as anyone.”
Darrius Heyward-Bey, who led the Raiders with 64 catches for 975 yards and four TDs last year, is the Raiders’ most experienced WR. Denarius Moore, a second-year pro, and Jacoby Ford, in his third season, are next in line. Promising rookies Juron Criner and Rod Streater are also in the mix for playing time.
