LB Rolando McClain was reinstated Monday after a suspension for detrimental conduct. (US Presswire) |
The Raiders waived starting cornerback Ron Bartell and backup fullback Owen Schmitt, reinstated linebacker Rolando McClain from the reserve/suspended by club list and promoted cornerback Chimdi Chekwa from the practice to the 53-man roster Monday.
In yet another move, they re-signed safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah to the practice squad.
McClain served a two-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. He is not required to return to the team until after he meets with coach Dennis Allen, who was in the Dallas area Monday for the funeral of his father, former Atlanta Falcons linebacker Grady Allen.
On Friday, before leaving for Texas, Allen said he had yet to talk to McClain since his suspension. Allen said he would "address" his situation sometime this week.
Bartell signed with the Raiders during the offseason as a free agent after spending his first seven NFL seasons with the Rams.
Last year he suffered a season-ending neck injury in the opener for St. Louis. This year, he broke a shoulder blade in the Raiders' opener against San Diego.
Bartell was placed on the injured reserve/designated for return list. He missed seven games and returned Nov. 11 against Baltimore and started five straight games before being released.
Two weeks ago, Bartell was benched during the first half against Cleveland and replaced by Phillip Adams. Adams had an interception, but he later suffered a concussion, and Bartell returned in the second half.
When the season began, Bartell and Shawntae Spencer , another free-agent pickup, were the Raiders' starting corners. Spencer sprained a foot in Week 2 against Miami and never played another game. He was placed on season-ending injured reserve early last month.
Schmitt, another free agent addition, played sparingly for the Raiders. He carried just two times for 1 yard.
Chekwa, a fourth-round pick out of Ohio State last year, was waived by Oakland in the final round of cuts on Sept. 1 this year then was signed to the practice squad Sept. 3.
