What matters: The playoff hopes for both teams ended weeks ago, but they're still battling for the No. 1 pick in the 2013 draft, which makes the game more interesting for fans and Mel Kiper Jr. Of course there are also jobs on the line for coaches and players, and this is an AFC West rivalry game, so the energy and intensity should be high despite the fact the Raiders and Chiefs have combined for five wins. The Raiders have lost six straight games and haven't won since Oct. 28 -- at Kansas City. In a strange twist to this series, home-field has become a disadvantage. The Raiders won at Kansas City for the sixth straight time earlier this season, and the Chiefs have won eight of the past nine meetings at Oakland, including 28-0 last season.
Who matters: Raiders QB Carson Palmer is putting up big passing numbers, but he's also throwing killer interceptions nearly every week. He has been picked off at least once in nine straight games and has 12 interceptions in that span. Palmer needs to throw a few more passes away and live for another down. Raiders RB Darren McFadden rushed for a season-high 114 yards on 29 carries earlier in the season against Kansas City. He returned last week against Denver after missing four games with a high-ankle sprain and rushed for 52 yards on 11 attempts. Despite aggravating his ankle late in the game, McFadden practiced all week and could be primed for a big game. The top priority for MLB Omar Gaither and the Raiders' defense will be to shut down explosive Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles, who leads the AFC in rushing.
Key matchups: Raiders right CB Phillip Adams vs. Chiefs QB Brady Quinn: Adams will make his first career start, replacing Ron Bartell, who was waived Monday. Adams had an interception in each of the past two games, including a pick Thursday night against Denver's Peyton Manning. Quinn started against the Raiders in October but left the game in the first half with a concussion after throwing only four passes -- one of them an interception. For the season, he has thrown just two TD passes with five interceptions and has a passer rating of 67.5. ... Raiders LT Jared Veldheer and RT Khalif Barnes vs. Chiefs OLBs Tamba Hali and Justin Houston: Houston (10) and Hali (8) have combined for 18 sacks, but in the first meeting, the Raiders didn't give up a sack to any Chief. That was with Willie Smith at right tackle, not Barnes, who missed the game after groin surgery.
Injuries of note: Starting DT Richard Seymour, who missed the past five games with a hamstring injury, returned to practice this week but suffered a setback Thursday in practice and didn't practice Friday. He's listed as questionable and will be a game-time decision. Starting SS Tyvon Branch (ankle/neck) is also questionable and will be a game-time decision. He practiced Friday for the first time this week but was limited.
Inside stuff: Coach Dennis Allen said that although there won't be any major changes to his starting lineup, he'll continue to get his younger players spot playing time. That includes rookie OL Tony Bergstrom, who has been getting work as a third tight end in power running formations and will likely get a few snaps at guard. Allen expects FB Jamize Olawale, signed last week off the Cowboys' practice squad, to suit up for the first time as a Raider and get some playing time. The Raiders cut veteran FB Owen Schmitt on Monday.
Connections: Raiders special teams coach Steve Hoffman was Kansas City's special teams coach from 2009-11. ... Raiders senior offensive assistant Al Saunders was an assistant coach for Kansas City from 1989-2005. ... Raiders LB Miles Burris and Chiefs WR Devon Wylie were teammates at Granite Bay High School.
Record watch: Palmer has 3,805 passing yards this season, fourth highest in franchise history with three games to play. He needs 885 passing yards to break Rich Gannon's single-season record of 4,689 set in 2002. Palmer needs 327 passing yards to eclipse his single-season high of 4,131 set in 2007 with the Bengals.
Stats you should know: Rookie WR Rod Streater has been on a roll. Two weeks ago he caught three passes for a career-high 96 yards and a 64-yard touchdown against Cleveland. Last week against Denver, he caught four passes for 100 yards, setting a career high.
Looking ahead: After Sunday's home finale, the Raiders will finish the season with back-to-back road games against Carolina and San Diego. They're 1-5 on the road.
Prediction: Raiders 17, Chiefs 13
