Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who has been slowed by sore knees through much of camp, missed practice again Wednesday. Seymour played Friday night at Arizona but hasn’t practiced since then. He missed the exhibition opener against Dallas, but Raiders coach Dennis Allen said “the plan” is for Seymour to play Saturday against Detroit.
“It’s not an injury,” Allen said. “He’s an older veteran guy, and his knees get a little sore, so we try to rest him to make sure we get him ready to play. … I think any time you go into camp you kind of know at some point in time some of these veteran players are going to need some time off. He pushed real hard early in camp, and then as we kind of have gotten into camp we’ve taken more time off with him.”
Leinart update: Backup QB Matt Leinart’s lacerated right index finger was heavily wrapped for practice. During the 30-minute media viewing window, the left-handed Leinart threw passes but didn’t take handoffs.
“He’s fine to play,” Allen said. “Whether we play him or not, I don’t know the answer to that yet. That will be a game-time decision.”
According to Allen, Leinart didn’t suffer a concussion or any other injury on the late, high hit that caused the finger injury against Arizona.
“We went through the battery of tests, and that was not the case,” Allen said. “Just the finger.”
If Leinart doesn’t play, then No. 3 quarterback Terrelle Pryor would likely get more time against Detroit, and No. 4 QB Kyle Newhall-Caballero might make his Raiders debut. Starter Carson Palmer is expected to play most, if not all, of the first half.
Extra points: Dennis Allen on free agent DE Andre Carter’s workout Tuesday for the Raiders: “It went all right. We got a good look-see. We’ll see what we do from there.” … TE Richard Gordon missed practice because of sore ribs from Friday night’s game, Allen said. … WR Jacoby Ford (sprained left foot) is still in a walking boot. … Starting center Stefen Wisniewski (calf) missed practice again, and Allen said he expects him to miss his second straight game Saturday. Alex Parsons will fill in again. … WR Denarius Moore (hamstring), LB Aaron Curry (knees), OT Ed Wang (shoulder), OT Zach Hurd (head), DT Jamie Cumbie (foot) and FB Rashawn Jackson (hip) remained out.
