It’s been a year since Raiders running back Darren McFadden suffered a Lisfranc injury against the Chiefs, this week’s opponent. (US Presswire) |
Raider RB Darren McFadden's 2011 season came to a painful end early in the seventh game against Kansas City at the Coliseum when he suffered a Lisfranc injury to his right foot.
Just over a year later, McFadden will line up against the Chiefs again Sunday, this time at Arrowhead Stadium, in the Raiders' seventh game this season.
"It did cross my mind earlier in the week when we first started preparing for them, but I haven't put much thought into that," McFadden said. "Last year is last year. It's a new year now."
McFadden has struggled to get untracked this year. He has rushed for 324 yards and is averaging 3.1 yards per carry. Through six games last year he rushed for 610 yards and averaged 5.5 yards per carry.
But the good news for McFadden this season is that he has remained healthy and hasn't reinjured the foot he hurt Oct. 23 last year.
"As far as my injury thing goes, I'm very happy with it. But at this time last year, I feel like I was a lot more productive as far as yardage and things. So, that part of it, I can't say I'm not happy about it, but I would have liked for it to have been more (production) right now."
Knapp likes no-huddle as a change-up: The Raiders have had success using a no-huddle offense, but offensive coordinator Greg Knapp said they likely won't make it the biggest part of their game plan.
"If you do one thing all the time in this league, the defensive coordinators and the defensive teams will start preparing for it and have specific things that will defeat that," Knapp said. "But if you have it as a weapon and you can use it at different times of the game, then they've got to prepare not only for no-huddle but the regular part of the offense. And so it's a good change-up and it'll catch a defense by surprise better than if you did it all the time."
Bryant sidelined by elbow injury: Reserve DT Desmond Bryant, who injured an elbow against Jacksonville, missed practice Thursday after being limited Wednesday.
"We're hoping that he's going to be able to practice tomorrow and then we'll be able to make a decision after that," coach Dennis Allen said. "We'll wait and see how he does tomorrow, how he practices. That's what our mindset is. I believe that's what his mindset is also."
Five and counting: Starting CB Shawntae Spencer (sprained right foot) and OT Khalif Barnes missed practice again and will all but certainly miss their fifth straight game Sunday. Both were injured in Week 2 against Miami.
Spencer didn't got off his crutches and out of his walking boot until last week. Barnes had a surgical "procedure" last month, according to Allen.
Extra points: LB Aaron Curry practiced again, but Allen said he won't decide whether to activate him for the Kansas City game until Saturday. He had been on the PUP list with sore knees until practicing last week for the first time this season. "He’s been out here practicing, he’s been taking reps with the defense," Allen said. "We don’t have to make that decision until Saturday so I’m going to wait until then to make that decision." ... DE Matt Shaughnessy (shoulder), WR Juron Criner (hip) and S Mike Mitchell (ankle), who were hurt during practice Wednesday, had limited participation in practice Thursday.
