When practice began Monday morning, Raiders C Stefen Wisniewski started making up for lost time.

Wisniewski was sidelined for the entire offseason after undergoing shoulder surgery to repair an injury he suffered a year ago during training camp.

Missing OTAs and minicamps was bad enough. But the fact that Wisniewski was moved from starting left guard to center and that the Raiders installed a new offense and blocking scheme, made standing on the sidelines even rougher.

“I was standing around doing nothing for awhile, and I didn’t like that,” said Wisniewski, declaring himself 100 percent healthy. “It’s been seven months since I’ve played football, and it feels great to be back.”

In truth, Wisniewski did more than just stand around during the offseason. He took countless mental reps and attended all the meetings where new offensive coordinator Greg Knapp unveiled his offense and first-year offensive line coach Frank Pollack installed the zone blocking scheme.

“Everything’s going to start off a little slower when you’re working with new stuff,” Wisniewski said. “Takes a little while to get comfortable with it, but definitely a good start today, and I’m completely confident that myself and everyone else will be where we need to be when it’s time to start playing.”

As a rookie, Wisniewski started 15 games at left guard and one at center, replacing an injured Samson Satele, who signed this year as a free agent with Indianapolis. When the Raiders drafted Wisniewski in the second round out of Penn State last year, their initial plan was to have him play center. One year later, that plan is finally in action.

“We’ve got to get him caught up to speed,” coach Dennis Allen said. “Obviously he missed a lot of time in the offseason. So these reps will be critical to him, and just on first glance I thought he had a nice day, but we’ll go in and look at the tape and really evaluate how he did.”

As a rookie last year, Wisniewski had a familiar face on the coaching staff when his uncle, former Raiders great Steve Wisniewski, was an assistant offensive line coach. Shortly before camp opened this year, Steve Wisniewski resigned for personal reasons.

“Definitely miss him,” Stefen Wisniewski said. “Definitely miss him a lot. He’s told me he’s going to be around game days and he’ll be around a little bit here at practice. So we’ll still see him.”
