Wide receiver Jacoby Ford will miss at least “a little bit of time” with a sprained foot and could possibly still be sidelined when the regular-season begins, Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen said during a conference call Saturday.
Ford was injured late in the first quarter Friday night against Arizona after catching a short pass and being tackled.
Ford, who doubles as the No. 1 kickoff and punt returner, sprained the same foot that forced him to miss six games last season.
Although Allen said initial reports “don’t seem to indicate there’s anything significant” to the injury, the Raiders are still waiting for results from an MRI and are trying to determine exactly how serious the injury is.
Allen was asked specifically if Ford might miss time in the regular season.
“I don’t know the answer to that,” he said. “Obviously, if you ask me, is there a chance, yeah, there’s a chance. We still got to continue to look at it and see what type of time frame we’re looking at.”
The Raiders are also missing starting wide receiver Denarius Moore, who has been sidelined by a lingering hamstring injury. Starting wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey hurt a shoulder Friday, but Allen said it’s a minor injury.
“Denarius is getting closer,” Allen said. “I don’t know how close he is yet, but he’s obviously getting closer. We’re going to look at that as far as whether we need to add somebody or not.”
Cornerback Bryan McCann will likely get the first crack at replacing Ford on punt and kickoff returns, Allen said.
“Right now we’re looking at Bryan McCann, but that’s obviously a position that we’ve got some concern over, and we’re going to be evaluating the guys we have here and we’re going to be looking at the rosters of the other 31 teams and see if there’s anyone that becomes available that can help us,” Allen said.
Allen said he received good injury news on RB Mike Goodson (shoulders) and QB Matt Leinart (lacerated right index finger).
“Both of them are going to be OK,” Allen said. “Goodson had some weakness in his shoulders, but we looked at him today and he feels good and looks good. We did some test on him to make sure it wasn’t anything related to the neck injury, and everything looks fine. So that wasn’t a big issue. Matt really had just a pretty good little cut on the index finger of his right hand, and I think he’s going to be fine, too.”
Injured linebacker Aaron Curry (knees), who’s on the PUP list, returned to camp from Los Angeles, where he received treatment from a specialist.
“He worked out today through a running program,” Allen said. “Looked pretty good, so we’ll look at him tomorrow and see where he’s at and kind of evaluate him as we go along.”
