The Rams mustered 160 total yards in their 23-6 loss in Chicago, the seventh-lowest yardage total since the franchise moved to St. Louis in 1995. Sam Bradford was sacked six times, the receivers dropped at least four balls, and the ballcarriers gained 59 yards on 17 carries. It was a complete offensive breakdown.
Offense: F
The makeshift offensive line, which held up well in last week’s win over Washington, was no match for Chicago’s front led by Julius Peppers and Israel Idonije (2.5 sacks). The line did not protect Bradford nor open holes for Steven Jackson. Wideout Brandon Gibson committed two egregious drops. One pass would have set up the Rams inside the Chicago 10 late in the first quarter. At the time, St. Louis trailed only 3-0.
Defense: B+
The Rams held Chicago to 274 total yards and 16 offensive points -- three field goals and a touchdown. The other touchdown came on Major Wright’s 45-yard interception return. St. Louis’ secondary shined again, holding Jay Cutler to 17 of 31 passing for 183 yards. Cortland Finnegan recorded his third interception in as many games. The run defense was soft at times but overall allowed 3.0 yards per carry.
Special teams: B-
Greg “The Leg” Zuerlein made two more field goals, including a 56-yarder, to improve to 8-for-8 this year. But a stupid special teams penalty led to the Bears’ opening field goal. After the Rams forced a first-quarter Chicago punt, they accepted a holding penalty that made Adam Podlesh kick again. On the second punt, linebacker Mario Haggan ran into Podlesh to extend the drive and Chicago got a 54-yard field goal from Robbie Gould.
Coaching: D
Coach Jeff Fisher said the Rams "got beat up front” by a very talented defensive team. It was up to Fisher and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to change the dynamic, but they couldn’t. Giving the rookie Daryl Richardson more carries might have helped. He averaged 4.0 yards on his four carries while Jackson, playing with a strained groin, averaged 2.6 yards on his 11 carries. The Rams were in it, down 13-6 early in the fourth quarter, until Bradford’s pass was deflected and picked off by Wright.
