The Ravens will activate Terrell Suggs from the Physically Unable to Perform list this week, placing him on the 53-man roster, the team announced Tuesday.
Suggs began the season on the PUP list after partially tearing his Achilles tendon, which required surgery in April. This is the first week Suggs was eligible to come off of the PUP list as the Ravens had the option to keep him on for three more weeks.
For now, the move is strictly procedural as Suggs has yet to practice this season. The Ravens will continue to exercise caution with Suggs, and a mid-November return is still expected.
Suggs will hope to add a pass rush element to a defense that has just 10 sacks in six games. In 2011, Suggs was named the NFL's defensive player of the year after totaling 70 tackles, 14 sacks and seven forced fumbles.
With Ray Lewis (right triceps) and Lardarius Webb (left ACL) expected to go on injured reserve, Suggs will take one of the open roster spots. A second roster spot remains open, which could be filled by a practice-squad player, such as ILB Josh Bynes or OLB Adrian Hamilton.
The Ravens could also choose to look at filling the position with a free-agent cornerback.
