Baltimore's top pick, outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw, was activated from the non-football injury list and will practice in teams first training camp session Tuesday afternoon, a Ravens source confirmed.
Upshaw failed his first conditioning test and missed a walkthrough as a result. He re-took the test and passed, which removed him from the NFI list.
“Yes I missed 1st walk through because of condition test but went back and passed it the same day to make it to the 1st practice Yesterday!!!” Upshaw tweeted.
Upshaw was drafted with the 35th overall pick in the 2012 draft. With Terrell Suggs (Achilles) rehabilitating a partially torn Achilles, Upshaw figures to see significant time on the field at both the rush and strongside linebacker positions.
It’s not uncommon for a rookie to fail his first conditioning test so it wasn’t seen as a huge deal when Upshaw was initially placed on the non-football injury list. Undrafted tight end Bruce Figgins (undisclosed) will start on the list with training camp set to begin this week.
In addition, the Ravens placed four more players on the physically unable to perform list: offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele (leg), offensive lineman Jah Reid (calf), wide receiver David Reed (ACL) and defensive end Pernell McPhee (knee).
Osemele, Reid and McPhee were injured during offseason workouts and were expected to be back by the beginning of training camp. Reed tore his ACL on a kickoff return during Week 16’s matchup against Cleveland.
It’s too early to tell to see how many, if any, of these Ravens players begin the season on the reserve PUP list, which sidelines them for the first six weeks of the regular season without counting against the team’s roster total. All of the players placed on the pre-camp non-football injury and PUP lists are eligible to return to the playing field at any time.
