Ravens defensive tackle Ryan McBean's season is in jeopardy after fracturing his left ankle in Baltimore's preseason opener against the Falcons on Thursday.
McBean was listed as Haloti Ngata’s backup. He wasn't going to be available for the first three games of this season due to being suspended for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drugs policy. If McBean is placed on injured reserve, that would create another roster spot for a younger defensive tackle to take. Bryan Hall is listed as the third defensive tackle on the depth chart and he’ll likely move up a spot.
This could give an opportunity for undrafted rookies Ishmaa’ily Kitchen or Terrence Moore to make the 53-man roster.
Also, an MRI revealed tight end Ed Dickson didn't sustain any structural damage to the sprained right shoulder he suffered on Thursday night.
Dickson will likely miss the remainder of the preseason but is expected to return for the Week season opener against Cincinnati on Sept. 10. Both of Baltimore’s tight ends are now dealing with injuries as Dennis Pitta broke his hand a little over a week ago. Pitta’s still scheduled to be back by the season opener.
Tight ends competing for the No. 3 spot now have a chance to show what they can do against the first- and second-team defense. Veteran Billy Bajema and undrafted rookie Matt Balasavage both had nice catches against Atlanta. Davon Drew is seen as a blocking tight end whose reception skills have steadily improved throughout training camp.
