It was a devastating first half of preseason football Saturday for the Washington Redskins against the Chicago Bears, and the 20-10 deficit and 262-101 yardage disadvantage had only a little to do with it.
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said after the team's 33-31 loss that injured linebacker Brian Orakpo and strong safety Brandon Meriweather would undergo MRIs, but Shanahan had no further word on the severity of their injuries.
Orakpo left the game with a left shoulder injury following a tackle attempt on WR Devin Hester. Orakpo, a two-time Pro Bowl player with 28 1/2 career sacks, had surgery to that shoulder in the offseason.
Shortly after his injury Saturday, Meriweather went out with a knee injury after missing a tackle attempt on RB Michael Bush on an 8-yard TD run.
Neither played returned.
Washington had already started the game with a makeshift offensive line due to injuries that sidelined Kory Lichtensteiger and Jammal Brown.
Orakpo was replaced by Rob Jackson, while Reed Doughty replaced Meriweather.
