Griffin knows there's no competition with the 'Skins quarterback position. (US Presswire) |
When the Redskins decided to trade up and draft Robert Griffin III, they were (deservedly) praised for their willingness to do what was necessary to land a franchise quarterback. And when they burned a fourth-round pick on Kirk Cousins, they were (deservedly) questioned for using a high draft pick on a backup.
But there's no question who's going to be starting for Washington in 2012: it's Griffin. He knows that (mainly because Mike Shanahan has said it), but in a recent interview with SB Nation, via Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post, Griffin didn't shy away from pointing out that "it's not a competition" between he and Cousins.
"With Kirk, it’s fine. They brought me in for a reason. We all know they brought me in to be the starter, and I plan to be the starter, and they brought him in for a reason as well. He knows that," Griffin said. "And it’s not a competition. Let’s just go ahead and say that. But we’re cool ... We work out together, we were roommates for rookie minicamp, so there’s no conflict there."
I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill, especially when the molehill already got kicked over by the head coach, but Griffin's comments about Cousins not competing with him is kind of insulting to the presumed backup, right?
Griffin also said that Cousins "looks like he was cut out of a magazine," he didn't sound malicious with his comments about the Michigan State graduate and Griffin certainly wasn't breaking any news by pointing out that he'll be starting for the Redskins.
But there was definitely a dismissive confidence to RG3's comments during the interview, and even if it doesn't ultimately mean anything related to his performance, hearing what he had to say was at least reason for pause, if only briefly.
