On the mend: Washington Redskins WR Anthony Armstrong (shoulder) should be able to play vs. Chicago. Armstrong, who has a second-degree sprain of the AC joint, did not play in the preseason opener vs. Buffalo but said if it had been a regular-season game he would have attempted to play. Armstrong is locked in a battle for one of the final spots at receiver, but his speed and ability to play special teams give him an edge.
Still hurting: FB Darrel Young (hamstring) will miss at least another week, coach Mike Shanahan said Saturday. Young won’t play in the preseason until the Aug. 25 game vs. Indianapolis. Shanahan said he’s running eight miles an hour on the treadmill, and the fear is if Young returned now he’d re-injure the hamstring.
Sidelined: DE Jarvis Jenkins did not practice because of flu-like symptoms. Left guard Maurice Hurt sat out with tendon issues in his left knee. Hurt was working with the starters in place of sidelined Kory Lichtensteiger (knee). Rookie Josh LeRibeus replaced Hurt with the starters. Corner Morgan Trent, who has knee/shoulder issues, also did not work.
Balmer update: Coach Mike Shanahan said the Redskins finally heard from defensive end Kentwan Balmer, who left camp more than a week ago. Shanahan said Balmer is doing OK, but he said he was unable to provide any further details.
