Washington Redskins LT Trent Williams (bruised left foot) and RG Chris Chester (sprained left ankle) both had limited participation in practice. Both are hopeful that they’ll resume full workouts Tuesday. Williams said he wanted to see how his ankle responded in the morning to the light running he did Monday.
Their return would be good news for a battered offensive line already missing two starters in LG Kory Lichtensteiger and RT Jammal Brown. The former said Monday he might return for the final preseason game, but there’s no date set for Brown’s return. In fact, coach Mike Shanahan hasn’t expressed any optimism about Brown being ready to start the season. At this point it’s difficult to imagine he’ll be ready anytime soon.
More aches: RB Roy Helu sat out practice because of Achilles tendinitis. Helu has had this before, Shanahan said. It’s uncertain how much more time he’ll miss. Regardless, this doesn’t help ease concerns about his durability. Meanwhile, backup NT Chris Neild left practice with a knee injury and will undergo an MRI.
RG3 update: Robert Griffin III continues to be inconsistent throwing on the move. It happened again Monday when on a bootleg an off-balance bullet sailed over the head of intended target TE Fred Davis. Griffin has had much better success with WR Pierre Garcon, particularly on out routes. The two connected again several times Monday. Garcon caught three of his four completions in the preseason opener.
“Hopefully I can have that same chemistry with Santana [Moss] and [Leonard] Hankerson,” Griffin said. ‘It’s not like we’re calling designated plays for Pierre. We’re just calling our base plays, going through the reads and it just so happen his number popped up.”
