Brown's injury isn't season-threatening. (US Presswire)

The Redskins are currently awaiting the result of an MRI on right tackle Jammal Brown's hip, but league sources tell CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora that the injury is not as bad as originally feared and will not require surgery.

Instead, rest and rehab will be the prescription for Brown's hip, the same injury he's dealt with over the past few years.

La Canfora reports that Brown will miss a few weeks and does not have a precisely known return date, but he will not miss the season as a result of the injury.

Brown's played in 28 games (26 starts) since being traded from New Orleans before the 2010 season, but he's been bothered by injuries throughout his entire time in Washington.

"I will find out a little bit later this evening," Mike Shanahan said Tuesday when asked about Brown's injury. "He should be back here tomorrow night, I do know that. I will get a good feel tomorrow and share that with you."

It's good news that Browns' injury won't end his season: the Redskins biggest weakness this year (and it's one that's being kind of glossed over because of the Robert Griffin III hype) is their offensive line. In a division stuffed with elite pass rushers -- six of the Skins games feature one or more of DeMarcus Ware, Jason Paul-Pierre, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Trent Cole and Jason Babin -- being able to protect the quarterback is paramount to success.

Brown being able to return this year won't immediately solve that, but it is a big plus.
