The San Francisco 49ers have signed kicker Billy Cundiff , according to a report from CSNBayArea.com.
It is unclear what the team's plan is for David Akers moving forward, but coach Jim Harbaugh inferred Monday there were two options. They could keep two kickers on the 53-man roster or cut Akers and move on.
"[Akers has] done a lot of great things for us," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "He’s made a lot of great kicks, a lot of big kicks. And he knows it, we know it, those kicks in the games, you’ve got to make those kicks.
"There will always be a level of competition around at any position to find who gives you the best chance to win the next game."
Akers has made just 24 of his last 37 field goal attempts since opening the season with five straight made kicks, including a record-tying 63-yard kick in the season opener at Green Bay.
Cundiff's recent track record hasn't been much better. He was cut by Baltimore, a team coached by Harbaugh's brother, John, following the preseason and then again by Washington earlier this season after making just 7 of 12 field goal attempts. He missed a 32-yard field goal at the end of regulation in last season's AFC championship game that would have sent it to overtime.
Following the 2010 season, Cundiff was named to the Pro Bowl after converting 26 of 29 attempts.
