Chargers owner/president Dean Spanos is planning to hand over the duties of overseeing football operations to his son, John Spanos, according to Albert Breer of NFL.com. Breer’s club source does not have a time frame for the transition, and it doesn't appear to coincide with other organizational changes that include the anticipated firing of general manager A.J. Smith and coach Norv Turner.
John Spanos is currently the director of college scouting. It had been widely rumored that John was being groomed for the team's GM position, but it wasn't expected that he would replace Smith.
It now appears John will bypass the GM role all together. In John’s new position, the GM and/or coach would report to him.
John’s brother, A.G. Spanos, already manages the finances as the Chargers CEO in charge of business affairs.
Dean Spanos would remain in the picture as the chairman of the board with both John and A.G. accountable to him.
When these transitions would occur is unknown, and may even be a few years down the road.
Meanwhile, the end of the road for Smith and Turner could come as early as Monday. Jimmy Raye, the Chargers’ director of player personnel, is considered a leading candidate for the Bolts next GM.
Eagles coach Andy Reid has expressed interest in coaching the Chargers if he is fired in Philadelphia, which is expected. However, there are several other coaches rumored to be candidates. The Chargers are likely to hire a GM first who would then be given power to select the coach.
