With Jerome Simpson pleading guilty to a felony drug charge and with a Covington, Ky., judge scheduled to sentence him Thursday, Simpson is spending what could be the last few hours of his freedom working out for the Rams.
That’s the word from the St. Louis Post Dispatch, which writes that the former Bengals receiver was scheduled to arrive in St. Louis on Tuesday and then work out for the team Wednesday.
Aside from the fact Simpson could go to jail for as much as 60 days and very well could face a suspension from the league, he still is some drawing interest on the free agent market (though, for now, the only visit he’s made is with the Rams).
After the Bengals selected him in the second round of the 2008 draft, Simpson was an afterthought in the receiving corps, making only four starts in his first three seasons in the league. But last year, after the departure of Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens, Simpson became a significant contributor, starting 14 games and recording 50 catches, 725 yards and four touchdowns.
When asked about Simpson at the annual owners meetings last week, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, mindful of Simpson’s legal issues, didn’t rule out bringing back Simpson. The Post Dispatch also writes the Rams, in ever need of receivers, are interested in Jericho Cotchery.
