For a season it made for a great story of redemption. But with the Jets struggling to stop the run and linebacker Aaron Maybin struggling in general, Newsday's Kimberly Martin reports that the team released the former Bills first-round pick who briefly found success with New York last year.
Maybin was the 11th overall selection in 2009 but started just one game in two years in Buffalo and was released before the 2011 season. Jets coach Rex Ryan, who had a history as the Ravens' defensive coordinator of getting the most out of his players, took on the reclamation project. Maybin led the team in sacks (6) in 2011 as a situational pass rusher but was ineffective in eight games this season (he had just one tackle) and was inactive for New York's demoralizing loss to Seattle on Sunday.
Maybin made news last month when he said this about Dolphins running back Reggie Bush: "We want to knock him out but we're out to do it legally."
On Tuesday, Bush was asked what he thought about Maybin getting cut.
"Nothing at all," he said via the Buffalo News' Tim Graham. "I have nothing to say about him, nothing negative to say about him. You never want to hear a guy getting cut because this is our livelihood, and this is how we make our money.
"So you never wish that upon anybody. But I have nothing negative to say about the guy, and hopefully he gets another shot to get back in this league."
