Addai reportedly quit his conditioning test. (US Presswire) |
Back in May, the Patriots signed former Colts running back Joseph Addai. It seemed like a great move at the time, with Addai still able to contribute and the Patriots always looking for castoffs to provide a surprising boost.
Addai was cut by the Pats on Wednesday, so clearly it didn't work out as intended. But according to Mary Paoletti of CSNNE, there's more to the story, as New England reportedly dumped the running back because he "quit" on his conditioning test.
"According to a league source, the veteran running back was struggling during his conditioning test and simply 'quit,'" Paoletti reports. "He was not long in New England after that."
Bill Belichick, when asked why Addai was dumped, wasn't entirely specific about the Pats reasoning.
"It didn't work out," Belichick said.
The Hoodie was particularly terse on Thursday, even by his standards -- I counted nine answers he gave to reporters that were less than five words. (Seriously, try answering a question in less than 10 words. And then try answering nine straight. It's hard without sounding like a jerk.)
If the reports about Addai's conditioning are accurate, it's quite surprising. At 29, it seemed like he might have some gas left in the tank, especially in a reclamation junkyard like New England. With Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen as the only competition, Addai stood a shot at getting pretty good reps in New England.
Now it's hard to imagine him getting a ton of run anywhere, especially with the report about his physical condition and effort trailing him.
