Matt Forte -- who was recently given the franchise tag by Chicago -- is not a happy camper right now. The Bears tagged the running back, but really drew his ire when they signed Michael Bush, the third free-agent backup signed since Forte started posting big numbers.
As a result of his contract status, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune is reporting that Forte won't show up for the team's offseason workouts that begin on Monday.
It's important to note that these offseason workouts are voluntary, so Forte's not exactly creating too big a stink by skipping them. But he might be making a statement by not signing his franchise tender.
Until Forte signs his tender, he won't be required to attend any workouts, which includes the Bears mandatory minicamp, which Biggs says, while as yet unannounced, will take place in June.
Forte is scheduled to make $7.7 million in guaranteed money on his one-year deal. But Forte, during an incredible 2011 campaign, did injure his knee. And even though it ended up being a relatively minor injury -- he later played in the Pro Bowl! -- it's reason to be worried about his long-term future.
A serious injury would sap his earning power and make it impossible for Forte to lock down the long-term contract he wants. Which is why it wouldn't be shocking to see him continue to hold out until the team offers him up a bigger deal.
