Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams is out for the rest of the season as he undergoes shoulder surgery, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. Adams had been dealing with a torn labrum and had "suffered additional shoulder damage" in Sunday's win over the San Francisco 49ers. It is the same shoulder that required surgery last offseason. Adams is expected to make a full recovery and return to the field in 2022, per Rapoport.
Adams played in 12 games this season recording 87 total tackles, two interceptions and five deflected passes. The 2021 campaign marked the first in his career that he has not recorded a sack. Over the previous four seasons, he had missed just six games.
Not a traditional safety by nature, Adams had averaged more than four sacks per season coming into the year. He is better known for his presence in the box and making plays downhill rather than his ability in coverage. PFF has graded him as the No. 63 safety in the league.
In July of 2020, Seattle shocked the NFL landscape sending two first-round picks, one third-round pick and safety Bradley McDougald to the New York Jets in exchange for Adams and a fourth-round pick. Adams was the No. 6 overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. Seahawks general manager John Schneider signed the LSU product to a four-year contract extension worth $70 million in August.
Over the final five weeks, Seattle is slated to play the Texans, Rams, Bears, Lions and Cardinals. Currently two games off the pace for a playoff position, the Seahawks likely need to win out and get some help around the conference.
