The Seahawks three-way QB competition has been the talk of training camp and after Saturday's 27-17 exhibition win over Tennessee, that talk's not going to stop.
Matt Flynn and Russell Wilson acquitted themselves well in their Seahawks debuts. The two combined to throw for 195 yards, each of them also had an interception.
"The quarterbacks did a really nice job. Nothing but good stuff came out of this game," coach Pete Carroll said.
Flynntastic: Playing the entire first half, Flynn was 11 of 13 for 71 yards going up against the Titans first- and second-team defenses. Flynn went the conservative route with his play, rarely throwing the ball downfield and spending most of the first half hitting his check-down receivers. But it should be noted that Flynn was playing without several sidelined receivers, including Sidney Rice and Doug Baldwin.
Flynn's biggest mistake came in the second quarter when a pass intended for Ben Obomanu was intercepted by Tennessee's Colin McCarthy. Flynn also fumbled a shotgun snap that slipped through his hands.
Russellmania runs wild: Nobody helped themselves more Saturday than rookie QB Russell Wilson. Wilson played the entire second half for the Seahawks and showed off his arm and legs. In the third quarter, Wilson hooked up with free-agent signee Braylon Edwards for a 39-yard touchdown. Wilson then iced the game in the fourth quarter with a 32-yard scoring run on a naked bootleg that put the Seahawks up 27-17. The rookie from Wisconsin led the team in rushing (59 yards) and passing (12 of 16, 124 yards, 1 TD).
"I felt like I did a really good job, especially for the first time being out there," Wilson said.
Wilson's performance won't earn him the Seahawks starting job as he was playing against the Titans second- and third-team defenses, but it could force Carroll to give him a serious look in the Seahawks next preseason game, Saturday in Denver.
Bad news for Miller: TE Zach Miller suffered a concussion in the second quarter after catching a 14-yard pass from Flynn. After making the catch, Miller was hit hard by Tennessee's Kamerion Wimbley and Terrence Wheatley. Miller was shaken up on the hit, but Carroll said after the game that the team doesn't believe it's a severe concussion. Severe or not, the injury is bad news for Miller, who suffered a concussion in October in a game against the Giants.
Braylon's back: With WRs Sidney Rice, Doug Baldwin, Ricardo Lockette and Terrell Owen not suiting up, someone had to step up in the Seahawks receiving corps and that's what eight-year veteran Braylon Edwards did. In the third quarter, a well-covered Edwards made a tough grab on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Wilson. On the play, Edwards reached over Tennessee defender Tommie Campbell, then fell to the goal line with the ball. Edwards had two catches for 51 yards.
Defense looks ready: The defense didn't give former Seahawk QB Matt Hasselback a warm welcome to Seattle. On the first play from scrimmage, CB Brandon Browner intercepted a tipped Hasselback pass and took it 23-yards for a score. The defense would pick off a second Hasselback pass and also recover a fumble. CB Jeremy Lane, the Seahawks sixth-round draft pick this year, impressed the most. He led the Seahawks in tackles (four solo, two assists) and had a forced fumble.
Hot Hauschka: K Steven Hauschka was in midseason form Saturday. The four-year veteran was 2 for 2 on FGAs, connecting from 40 and 41 yards.
