Longsnappers like to celebrate, too. WR Golden Tate (81) enjoyed some postgame levity with LS Clint Gresham after the Seahawks' stunning 24-23 win over New England on Sunday in Seattle. (US Presswire) |
Russell Wilson outplayed Tom Brady in the fourth quarter. The defense shut down Brady when it counted, and Pete Carroll outcoached Bill Belichick. What does all of this mean? It means good grades for everyone following the Seahawks' stunning 24-23 win over New England on Sunday.
Offense: A-
If the second and third quarters didn't happen, this grade would be an A+, but they did happen, so we have to penalize the offense just slightly. The Seahawks totaled only 70 yards in the second and third quarters. However, now that the negative is out of the way, let's focus on the positive. Wilson threw for a career-high 293 passing yards and three touchdown passes, including two pivotal ones in the fourth quarter. The school of thought this season has been that if an opposing defense shuts down the Seahawks running game, then Seattle can't score. Well, that's out the window now. The Seahawks were still able to put up 24 points even though the Patriots held Marshawn Lynch to a season-low 41 yards. Wilson's deep ball -- he completed passes of 51, 50 and 46 yards against New England -- adds a much-needed element to a Seahawks offense that all of the sudden has some bite to go with the defense's bark. Previous game's grade: B
Defense: A
It was a weird game for the defense. It wasn't able to put much pressure on Brady, and it surrendered a season-high 475 total yards, but it came through when it counted. The Seahawks secondary picked off Brady twice, including an Earl Thomas fourth quarter interception in the end zone. Going into Sunday's game, Brady had only been picked off once all season. Rookie MLB Bobby Wagner was everywhere for the Seahawks. The first-year linebacker totaled a franchise rookie-record 14 tackles and was only four off the non-rookie record of 18. Previous game's grade: A
Special teams: A-
Kicker Steven Hauschka made his only field goal try and punter Jon Ryan had another booming day. Ryan became only the third punter in NFL history to average 60 yards per punt on a minimum of four punts. His farthest kick on Sunday was a booming 66-yarder in the third quarter. Despite his brilliant day, Ryan did make one mistake when he fumbled a snap in the second quarter. The Patriots recovered the ball but were unable to capitalize on the mistake when Brady was called for intentional grounding, a penalty that led to a 10-second runoff and the end of the first half. Previous game's grade: B+
Coaching: A
Pete Carroll has been encouraging Wilson to look downfield more, and that encouragement paid off in a big way against the Patriots with six of Wilson's 16 completions going for 20 or more yards. With a more open offensive game plan, the coaching staff put Wilson in a position to succeed, an opportunity Wilson took advantage of. Previous game's grade: B+
