After four short months, the Barrett Ruud era is over in Seattle.
The Seahawks traded Ruud to the New Orleans Saints for an undisclosed draft pick Monday. Ruud, who signed in April, had been limited in training camp with myriad of injuries.
Ruud, who spent the 2011 season with the Tennessee Titans, was brought to Seattle to replace departed middle linebacker David Hawthorne, who signed with the Saints in April. Ironically, the Saints had to trade for Ruud after Hawthorne tore his meniscus against Jacksonville in a preseason game Aug. 17.
Although Ruud was only on the team for just over four months, his trade isn't a completely shocking move for the Seahawks. The seven-year veteran became expendable after the emergence of second round draft pick Bobby Wagner. Wagner, the 2011 WAC Defensive Player of the Year, has started both preseason games for Seattle and has quickly become a favorite of coach Pete Carroll. Carroll had been adamant about getting Wagner's blazing speed on the field and Wagner hasn't disappointed.
The coaching staff has also been impressed with Heath Farwell. Farwell, a middle linebacker, had been at the bottom of the depth chart when camp started in late July, however, recently, he'd been threatening to move in to Ruud's second team spot before Ruud was traded Monday.
Davis waived: Besides trading Ruud, the team also waived defensive end Dexter Davis Monday. Davis was injured in the Seahawks preseason win over Denver Saturday. If he clears waivers, Davis will be added to injured reserve. To fill Davis' roster spot, the team signed cornerback Donny Lisowski. Lisowki might not even have been done cleaning out his locker, the cornerback had originally been cut on Aug. 7 to make room on the roster for Terrell Owens.
