As was the case around most of the league, the Pittsburgh Steelers' first round of cuts Monday was lacking in big names. Chopping from 90 down to 75 usually involves jettisoning fringe players who likely never had a chance to make the final 53-man roster, anyway. On Monday the Steelers released rookie K Daniel Hrapmann.
Come Friday after the final preseason game is played, the chances increase dramatically that a marquee name or two could be released. The Steelers' lack of cutdown day drama was underscored by the fact that the backup kicker -- Hrapmann -- being let go was probably the most noteworthy move.
Notable cuts: Hrapmann came out of college with a rather stellar resume for a kicker, and he signed with a team that employed a journeyman incumbent coming off a mediocre season. What's more, the strong-legged rookie from Southern Miss made all six of his field goal attempts during the preseason -- including three from beyond 40 years. Still, the Steelers decided they felt more comfortable sticking with Shaun Suisham, who made only seven of 13 attempts from 40 yards or more last season. Hrapmann was an All-American kicker in college. ... S Myron Rolle was one of the more intriguing players the Steelers signed over the offseason -- but that's because he's a Rhodes Scholar -- not for his football prowess. He didn't show much in camp, so the Steelers cut him. That's OK -- he surely has a good fallback plan for life. ... LB Mortty Ivy grew up in suburban Pittsburgh and went to college at nearby West Virginia University. He had an outside shot to make the final roster, but a hamstring injury derailed that. Ivy on Monday was placed on the waived/injured list.
Complete cut list: LB Ryan Baker (rookie, undrafted, LSU), DT Mike Blanc (1st year, Auburn), WR Paul Cox (rookie, undrafted, Mississippi Valley State), CB Andre Freeman (rookie, Slippery Rock), K Daniel Hrapmann (rookie, Southern Mississippi), OL Kyle Jolly (1st year, North Carolina), LS Matt Katula (8th year, Wisconsin), TE Jamie McCoy (1st year, Texas A&M), CB Walter McFadden (1st year, South Carolina State), TE Justin Peelle (11th year, Oregon), S Myron Rolle (1st year, Florida State), WR Juamorris Stewart (1st year, Southern), DT Kade Weston (2nd year, Georgia) and WR Jimmy Young (1st year, TCU). Other moves: LB Mortty Ivy (Waived/Injured List).
