OLB James Harrison acknowledged Tuesday that he probably won't play in either of the Steelers' final two preseason games.

"No need to risk it," the five-time Pro Bowler said.

Harrison termed himself "week to week" and said there was "nothing different" concerning the status of his left knee. He underwent a minor procedure a week ago.

Harrison remains on the PUP list. He said he still is targeting the Sept. 9 season opener at Denver, adding that he would need two or three practices before he could play.

Harrison continues to work out on his own. Earlier in camp, when he pushed himself too hard, his knee swelled up and set him back.

Harrison said he is not worried about the knee turning into a longterm issue and he has been pleased with the work second-year LB Chris Carter has been doing in his stead.

Redman "hip" to new injury diagnosis: RB Isaac Redman was thought to have been suffering from a groin injury throughout much of training camp. Turns out, an MRI performed last week determined it actually is his hip.

"But it was right in the groin area," Redman said Tuesday.

Redman didn't practice with the Steelers fully on Tuesday but did work out on his own. Individual work is the plan for the rest of the week. It's unlikely he'll play in the preseason game Saturday night at Buffalo, and his status for the preseason finale against Carolina next week is also in doubt.

"It's frustrating not going out there..." Redman said. "I'm just trying to get back as soon as possible."

Still, the MRI generally revealed good news. It did not reveal any significant damage.

"It feels a lot better -- a lot better," Redman said about his condition as opposed to last week. "It's not hurting me as much. Just doing normal things, getting up and getting out of bed, so it feels good."

New old faces on the practice field: OT Max Starks, NT Casey Hampton and RB Rashard Mendenhall were taken off the PUP list last week. To varying degrees, each of them hit something of a milestone in their returns Tuesday from torn ACL injuries.

Hampton and Mendenhall were on the practice field officially taking part in a practice for the first time this camp. Starks officially practiced Friday at St. Vincent College with his teammates -- but on a significantly limited basis. Coach Mike Tomlin said Starks "got a standard amount of work" Tuesday.

"We don't have any limits on how we works at this juncture. We'll kind of be reactionary and not thinking in that regard. If we need to scale back, we will. We hadn't at this point, so we're just proceeding because we've been given a clean bill of health."
