At midmorning Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced 15 cuts that reduced their roster to the NFL-mandated 75-player limit it needed to reach by later in the day. 

Then, after the deadline passed the team added another player to (legally) go back up to 76 players on the roster.

The Steelers claimed RB DuJuan Harris off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 5-9, 208-pound Harris had nine carries for 42 yards, one reception for four yards and 14 kickoff returns for 308 yards (22.0 average) as a rookie last season. 

An undrafted free agent signed by Jacksonville, Harris had 2,635 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns at Troy. 

It's entirely possible that the Steelers signed Harris merely because they have so many banged-up running backs and needed a body to carry the load in Thursday's preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers. 

There doesn't seem to be a niche for Harris to fill otherwise -- unless one of the Steelers' backs is more injured than thought. Harris also could see time as a returner. Although the Steelers have plenty of candidates for that spot (most notably, RB Chris Rainey), none have been overly impressive during training camp.

Harrison won't rule out return for season opener: LB James Harrison swears he is not frustrated by a knee injury that has kept him on the PUP list throughout training camp. His short answers to questions about his status make him sound like one.

Will you be ready to go early in the regular season? 

"I'm hoping," he said.

Is playing in the Sept. 9 season opener in Denver not an option at this point?

"I didn't say that."

Keisel OK: DE Brett Keisel sustained what, at first glance, appeared to be a potentially serious ankle injury in the preseason win over the Buffalo Bills Saturday. Keisel did not practice Monday, but he said he was fine.

Not practicing: Other then Keisel and Redman, WR Jerricho Cotchery (back), OT Marcus Gilbert (calf) and LB LaMarr Woodley (back) did not practice Monday. Tomlin, though, characterized their conditions as "minor bumps and bruises."
