The two-minute offense (and defense) took the lead role in the Steelers' training camp practice Thursday.
The winner? Not easy to declare.
Officials were on the field in uniform and Mike Tomlin running around barking out the situation (and serving other duties, such as spotting the ball) in some specific hyotheticals.
Once, the a drive started at the offense's "own" 38 with 1:52 left on the clock. This was done twice -- the first-team offense ran against the second-team defense and vice versa. Neither offense reached the end zone, with a Ben Roethlisberger-led unit having the clock run out inside the 5-yard line.
The next seemingly-random scenario Tomlin conceived involved 1:06 left with the offense having two timeouts and needing 48 yards for a score.
This time, Roethlisberger hit Antonio Brown for a 36-yard touchdown. On the first snap of the second drive, the second-team defense intercepted the reserve offense.
Other notes from the seventh full practice day of Steelers training camp:
OLB LaMarr Woodley misses second practice: Woodley did not practice for the second consecutive day. Tomlin won't say Woodley is injured and maintains that he will be back for Friday's practice. Tomlin characterized Woodley's Wednesday absence as part of a plan to limit wear and tear on veterans. Woodley, who was limited by a hamstring injury last season, had a slight limp when walking on campus.
LB Brandon Hicks injured: Hicks had a lower abdominal injury that Tomlin said he hopes is not significant. RB Jon Clay missed practice due to a groin injury, and Tomlin said he "may be close" to returning.
ILB Lawrence Timmons expands role: Timmons has been taking reps at OLB as the team deals with injuries to Woodley, James Harrison and Jason Worilds. Harrison was gregarious in an early afternoon session with the media -- except when asked about a timetable for his return to practice. Then, he'd gave a steely look and one-word answers. "Day-by-day," was the most he said.
