Defensive tackle Shaun Smith was released by the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday, the Tennessean reported.

Smith, a nine-year veteran, fell behind younger defensive linemen Mike Martin, Karl Klug and Zach Clayton on the depth chart during training camp. Though Smith (6-2, 325) shed 30 pounds in the offseason with frequent hot yoga classes, he received few reps in each of the Titans' first two preseason games. He had 44 tackles and two quarterback pressures in 2011, his only season with Tennessee. Smith previously spent time with the Saints, Bengals, Browns and Chiefs.

“It's been real Nashville, time to see what team I am on next,” Smith wrote on his Twitter account. “I am thankful for everything.”

DT Marks reacts to Kelly's comments on Kolb: The Titans on Thursday will face a Cardinals quarterback -- in the person of Kevin Kolb -- who was deemed “scared” by Raiders defensive tackle Tommy Kelly in last Friday's 31-27 win by Arizona.

“He is skittish, he is scared back there,” Kelly said, via the Associated Press. “Anytime anybody gets close to him he starts looking at the refs. As a defensive lineman you love a quarterback like that. He ain’t even trying to look at the routes no more. He is paying attention to us and you ain’t going to get nothing done like that.”

In limited action, Kolb was sacked three times and whistled for a penalty for intentional grounding.

“Scared? Scared of what? Taking a hit? I have never been afraid of anyone on the field, and that will never change,” Kolb said. “That includes No. 93 [Kelly]. There's a fine line between holding in the pocket and trying to escape to make a play. Tommy Kelly is too clueless to know the difference. I don't mind people criticizing my play. Don't ever question my toughness."

Defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks didn't hesitate when asked if he could sense fear in an opposing quarterback's eyes.

“I guess he feels like he's a starting quarterback, he's getting paid like one, and once you start getting paid like one you want to get protected like one,” Marks said.

While Marks said he doesn't plan on targeting Kolb, he doesn't plan on taking it easy on him either. Kolb, who's entering his second season with the Cardinals, last faced the Titans in 2010 when he played for the Eagles. Kolb went 26 of 48 for 231 yards but threw two interceptions in the Titans' 37-19 win. Kolb was sacked once.

“He had some pretty good games in Philly, he had some standout games,” Marks said. “He has to get comfortable with his offensive line, get comfortable with everything around him . That takes time. Until that time comes we're going to continue to prey on the scared. Why not? You should.”

CB Campbell excited about facing Fitzgerald: The Titans secondary will receive a test on Thursday against Cardinals Pro Bowl wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. It could help the secondary prepare for other highly regarded, rangy receivers. Tennessee is set to face a pair in the opening month of the regular season in Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson and Texans wideout Andre Johnson.

“He's one of the best wideouts in the game along with Calvin,” Campbell said. “If you can go out there and do well against him you'll be able to do well against a lot of receivers in this league.”

A strong performance by the second-year cornerback against Fitzgerald could help boost his confidence. Campbell was beaten by Seahawks wide receiver Braylon Edwards on a jump ball for a touchdown in the Titans' preseason opener.

“With [Fitzgerald] they say he isn't fast, but I watched the NFL Top 100, and he was still running by guys,” Campbell said. “He made his career by making catches against two or three people. In jump ball situations if I can't come down with the ball, I'm just going to try to knock it down.”
