Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak said Monday it is unlikely that starting quarterback Jake Locker will be active for Sunday’s Week 7 game at Buffalo.
Locker has been out since re-injuring his left, non-throwing shoulder in a week 4 loss at Houston. Though Munchak said Locker underwent additional testing on Monday, the Titans’ coach said the results were not immediately available.
“He’s doing better, much better than he was last week at this time,” Munchak said. “He’ll probably start doing more activity this week.”
Munchak indicated that it’s too early to tell if Locker will return in Week 8 when the Titans face the Colts. Locker initially suffered the injury in an opening-week loss to New England when he attempted to make a tackle on Patriots’ safety Patrick Chung.
The Titans’ second-year coach has been impressed with Locker’s commitment to the team on the sidelines during his two-game absence. Locker has also been vocal in team meetings and film sessions throughout the week, Munchak said.
“During the game he’s right into it just like Matt (Hasselbeck) was when Jake was the guy,” Munchak said. “Those guys support each other as much as you possibly can.” “They’ve got ideas, they’re telling each other what they saw when they’re going through the pictures on game day. They’re right in there with Dowell (Loggains), the quarterback coach, with what they’re seeing – with what throw might have been in there.”
Sunday losses help Titans for playoff positioning: Several surprising losses on Sunday dropped a number of AFC teams to 3-3 on the season. If the playoffs started Monday, the 3-3 Jets and 3-3 Bills would earn the conference’s two wild card spots. The Titans sit just a game back at 2-4.
“(We) watched a lot of games yesterday, teams are going to knock each other off,” Munchak said. “You watch teams lose yesterday, and you’ve got to realize that we’ve got to take care of our own business.”
There is a four-way tie in the AFC East at first place at 3-3. If the Chargers lose to the Broncos on Monday night only two teams in the conference will be above .500.
“We’re 2-4, and we thought we’d be better than that but we haven’t played good enough to be better than that,” Munchak said. “This is our chance now to get something going. We have to try to win two in a row.”
Injury update: RB Javon Ringer remains out with a knee injury. Ringer is expected to miss 4-6 weeks after suffering a torn MCL in the Week 5 loss at Minnesota. Ringer said the swelling in his knee has decreased some over the last week. Munchak doesn’t anticipate placing the fourth-year running back on IR.
“The way I got tackled I was able to see it,” Ringer said. “I thought I dislocated my knee and I thought I tore everything. I heard something in my knee pop, too -- to hear that I didn’t tear my ACL or PCL, I felt tremendously blessed.”
WR Kenny Britt had four catches for 62 yards in last Thursday’s win over the Steelers, despite playing through a sprained ankle. Britt also said Monday that he continues to experience soreness in his right knee. The fourth-year receiver tore two ligaments in his right knee last September.
CB Tommie Campbell (ankle) will likely miss Sunday’s game at Buffalo, Munchak said. The Titans’ coach is optimistic that DT Jurrell Casey (shoulder) will be active for the game vs. the Bills.
Munchak also said there is a chance S Markelle Martin (knee) could practice on Wednesday. It will mark the opening of a three-week window when the Titans will decide whether to remove the rookie safety from PUP. Martin is allowed to practice during the window, according to league rules.
