While the workload of Tennessee Titans QB Jake Locker could increase in practice this week, coach Mike Munchak indicated on Monday that Matt Hasselbeck would probably start for the fourth straight week when the Titans return home to face the Colts in Week 8.
Locker hasn't played since he re-injured his left, non-throwing shoulder in a Week 4 loss to the Texans. The second-year quarterback underwent an MRI on Monday morning, after the Titans’ 35-34 win at Buffalo. The results weren't available when Munchak conducted his weekly press conference Monday afternoon.
“I continue to progress and feel better every day,” Locker said Monday.
Locker will regain the starting quarterback spot when he returns to the lineup, Munchak said. The Titans coach ruled out any possibility that Locker would be placed on IR for the remainder of the season.
Locker threw on a limited basis in 7-on-7 drills last Wednesday and Thursday in practice before taking part in individual running drills with strength and conditioning coach Steve Watterson in Friday’s practice. Munchak said if Locker makes progress early this week, he could attempt passes in traffic Wednesday.
“You want to make sure that it’s healing right before he starts to get bumped and hit and pushed around,” Munchak said.
Hasselbeck is coming off his best performance this year when he opened 9 of 11 for 112 yards against the Bills and led the Titans to their first opening-drive touchdown of the season. For the year, Hasselbeck has five touchdowns, four interceptions and has completed 61.5 percent of his attempts. Locker, meanwhile, has four touchdowns, two interceptions and a 63.2 completion percentage in limited action.
The Titans looked particularly sharp in a high-tempo, no-huddle offense to open the game. Hasselbeck led the offense on an eight-play, 77-yard drive for the game’s first score. The series took just over four minutes. The Titans didn’t have a single incompletion or third down on the drive.
“I think the players are very comfortable with it,” Munchak said. “It’s something we can do at any time.”
The offense worked on no-huddle situations extensively during training camp, in part to help the defense prepare for the Patriots’ quick-strike attack in Week 1. The Titans also practiced the no-huddle on both sides in a joint session with the Falcons in early August. Locker flourished in no-huddle situations in the opening week of the preseason against the Seahawks.
The Titans have three more games before their bye in Week 11.
“When I come back, I’m not going to play with any concern,” Locker said. “Any time you go in with hesitation you hurt yourself.”
LT Roos, LB Diles head long injury report: Pro Bowl LT Michael Roos had his appendix removed at a Nashville hospital Monday morning after vomiting Sunday night, Munchak said. Roos didn’t show any symptoms of a ruptured appendix on the flight back from Buffalo, Munchak added.
The eight-year veteran has started every game of his career. Roos’ consecutive streak of 119 straight starts is second in the league among offensive tackles, behind Lions’ offensive lineman Jeff Backus (181).
“He’s like Bruce Matthews -- he’s a quick healer,” Munchak said. “He can tolerate high pain levels.”
Veteran lineman Mike Otto will start at left tackle if Roos is unable to play. Roos is considered day-to-day, according to Munchak.
Munchak said LB Zac Diles would be placed on IR after suffering a broken leg early in the win. The Titans could be thin at linebacker this week in practice. LBs Will Witherspoon (hamstring) and Patrick Bailey (ribs) also suffered injuries against the Bills. Bailey could miss a week of action with a broken rib.
Munchak is optimistic that LB Colin McCarthy will return vs. the Colts. McCarthy missed the win over the Bills with a sprained ankle. The Titans could pursue a veteran linebacker this week, Munchak said.
