The Cardinals needed to see something out of Kevin Kolb on Friday night in their third preseason game to give them some hope that he could earn their starting quarterback job. Instead, they got, well, less than nothing.

Kolb went 3-for-6 for 23 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. He led the team to a touchdown (scored by Ryan Williams, who really "led" to the score) on their first drive, but he had an incredibly awkward second series, when, on the second play of the drive, he was flagged for intentional grounding to put the ball on Arizona's one. He was then sacked by Raiders defensive lineman Tommy Kelly.

After the sack, the Raiders television crew reported that Kelly ran to the sideline yelling "That boy's scared!"

It's a devastating phrase to hear when discussing a potential starting quarterback, especially one who makes as much coin as Kolb does. And it's precisely why it wouldn't be shocking if he didn't win the job over John Skelton (or whoever else Arizona might bring in).

And lest you think that Kelly's words might have been misheard, the defensive lineman was asked about his thoughts on Kolb after the game, and piled on the Cards quarterback even more.

"He is skittish. He is scared back there," Kelly said, via the Associated Press. "Anytime anybody gets close to him he starts looking at the refs. As a defensive lineman you love a quarterback like that. He ain't even trying to look at the routes no more. He is paying attention to us and you ain't going to get nothing done like that."

The Cardinals didn't exactly do a great job of protecting Kolb on Friday night, but that's the kind of thing you have to expect when you ignore the offensive line for the sake of bringing in additional skill players like Michael Floyd.

Kolb's now 5-of-15 for 47 yards in three preseason games, with no touchdowns and an interception. Because of his status as the highest-paid quarterback on the roster, it's possible he could still end up winning the starting job in Arizona.

But with each passing disaster of an outing for Kolb, the trade with the Eagles immediately following the lockout looks worse and worse for Arizona.
