The Vikings have been relatively healthy this season, but that suddenly came to a halt in Thursday night's loss to the Buccaneers. CB Chris Cook broke his right arm trying to make a tackle, and he will be lost 7-8 weeks.
Thursday was the eighth game Cook has played this season, the most in his three-year career. He injured both knees his rookie year (meniscus tears), and in his second season he missed 10 games with an off-the-field issue. Coach Leslie Frazier said Cook is upset about missing time again.
“Oh, he’s distraught,” Frazier said. “It’s tough. It’s tough.”
Frazier said that Cook will have surgery and will be placed on injured reserve in hopes of getting him back before the season is over. If he's out eight weeks, his return would have to be during a postseason run. Frazier said the injury is a blow because Cook was really starting to play well.
“I think I mentioned it a couple of weeks ago," Frazier said. "I thought he was really coming along, and he had a good game yesterday in the time that he was out there. He was playing well for us, so it’s unfortunate.”
Frazier said he will likely start Antoine Winfield and Josh Robinson at the corners with A.J. Jefferson and Marcus Sherels filling in at the nickel and dime. They have already begun to review the waiver wire for a replacement.
"We may bring someone in tomorrow to work out,” Frazier said. “I know Rick [Spielman] and George [Paton, GM and assistant GM, respectively] are scouring the wire and looking at names they have on a list. We're going to talk about it [Friday] afternoon and determine when we'll bring a guy in and take a look at him."
