Sometimes one play can turn a potential win into a loss and for the players; a bad play can mar a decent performance. Just ask Vikings LB Erin Henderson, who played a good game against the Colts on Sunday, but made one mistake that changes that perception.
“The big plays--that was my biggest fear going into the game, that we would play good football, and they would sneak in a couple big plays on us, and we would be in a dogfight,” Henderson said. “We gave up a couple big ones, myself included. It's one of those things where you learn from it and you gain the experience and try to move forward from it.”
Henderson led all Viking tacklers with 12 tackles on Sunday, including a sack of QB Andrew Luck, but it is a play that he missed that will be longer remembered.
With the score 10-6 shortly before halftime, the Colts had third-down-and-3 from the 30 yard-line, and WR Reggie Wayne ran a post-route right into Henderson’s coverage area. Henderson was late with coverage (as were the safeties coming in to help over the top) and Wayne grabbed a touchdown pass from Luck to give the Colts 20 points, a total the Vikings didn’t match until the last minute of the game.
“I was in a very good position,” Henderson said. “I was where I was supposed to be, and I just tried to make a play on the ball too soon. When I turned around to look at it, I misjudged it completely. It's one of those things that you learn from, and you move forward from there. But I felt I played a pretty good game.”
Henderson did play a good game, but it will be remembered for one bad play.
“I misplayed the ball,” he said. “I misjudged it a little bit. So hopefully there are quarterbacks out there, watching it, and they think that they can come in and try to get some on me, too. I got a little surprise for them.”
