The versatile Everson Griffen is on the move again. He was drafted three years ago as a defensive lineman, then last season the Vikings gave him some additional duty at linebacker. He came into camp this season with coach Leslie Frazier saying Griffen was going to concentrate on linebacker to bolster the depth at the position. Well, on Monday, Frazier announced that Griffen will return to his original spot of defensive end.

“We saw enough of him at linebacker,” Frazier said after practice. “We feel like this is going to be better for him. We talked to him Sunday night when we got back [from San Francisco]. And he agrees that this is better for him to focus on that position.”

One of the reasons for the move is that Frazier said the team was more comfortable with the depth at outside linebacker, where Griffen was third on the depth chart.

“Erin Henderson and Marvin Mitchell are really battling for that spot,” said Frazier. “They’re doing a good job competing. So we feel like we’re going to be OK if they continue to develop. And (Griffen) gives us some things on the defensive line that we knew we had from his past. So we’re going to leave him at that position. But he’ll still do some linebacker-type work in third-down situations.”

Unfortunately for Griffen, work at either position might have to wait, as he sat out the tail end of practice after injuring his left knee. Frazier said they were going to check it out and he would learn more later Monday evening.

Regardless, the coaches remain intent on getting Griffen and his energy on the field somehow. Fans may just have to watch closely to see where on defense he will line up each play.
