Coach Leslie Frazier said that he would likely rotate the third cornerback spot in the nickel defense between CB Josh Robinson and CB Brandon Burton.
Robinson is a rookie and Burton a second-year player with only one start under his belt. With Chris Cook having played in only 12 games in three seasons, and a rookie (Harrison Smith) and second-year man (Mistral Raymond) starting at the safety positions, Frazier’s secondary is very young, but he still likes what he sees.
“I like our depth,” Frazier said. “This is the best quality depth that I can remember in a number of years. The inexperience as far as starts are concerned, you really can’t get around that. We’ve had more experience in other years, but I can’t remember the quality of depth that we have right now. I feel real good about what we have and now it’s a matter of our developing the guys that we do have and letting them come along and grow together.”
On the other end of the spectrum is 14-year CB Antoine Winfield, who will start at cornerback and have to tutor this crew.
That’s a big deal,” Frazier said of Winfield’s leadership. “His veteran experience in the meeting rooms as well as on the practice field goes a long way.”
Rookie on rookie: Rookie LT Matt Kalil will often face Jaguars rookie RDE Andre Branch in his first regular season start on Sunday. And Kalil already knows what he’ll be up against.
“He’s a great player,” Kalil said of Branch. “He’s got a high motor, a great pass rusher, also great in the run game. Pretty big guy. So I am excited to face him and see what he has to offer.”
No news on Peterson: Coach Leslie Frazier said that there is no news to report on the decision about whether RB Adrian Peterson will play on Sunday.
“We’ll talk as a staff when I go back inside and we will talk again tomorrow,” said Frazier. “But (there’s) nothing new regarding him. We will definitely have an answer on Sunday.”
Peterson is officially listed as questionable on the injury report.
Film study is the key: The Vikings defense faces six quarterbacks this season that have two years of experience or less—starting off with second-year man Blaine Gabbert of the Jaguars. While it might be easier to face an inexperienced player on paper, DC Alan Williams said that when it comes to film it is a different thing altogether.
“When you have a young quarterback, you don’t have a ton of film on that guy,” said Williams. “We don’t have a ton of film (on Gabbert) and on what he’s doing in [Mike] Mularkey’s system. I don’t look at that as a good thing. I like to know what I’m getting. When you know what you’re getting, you have a little bit of a comfort zone. I’d rather be able to prepare them for what we think we’re going to see.”
Looking for more help: Coach Leslie Frazier has said many times that the team is always working the waiver wire and looking for players to work out. On Friday, the offensive and defensive coaches were working out two players after practice. One of them is former Bears DT Brian Price. No information yet on the second player.
Injury report: The Vikings are relatively healthy going into Sunday’s season opener. They lost WR Greg Childs for the year earlier in training camp, and the saga of Adrian Peterson’s return is ongoing.
But most of their injured players have returned (RG Geoff Schwartz, TE John Carlson, S Robert Blanton, DT Letroy Guion and CB Marcus Sherels); they have been all listed as probable and could see action on Sunday.
Three players have been ruled out for the Jaguars game as they are recovering from ankle injuries: LB Marvin Mitchell, S Andrew Sendejo and WR Jarius Wright.
Frazier said that new Vikings, OL Mark Asper and CB A.J. Jefferson, would likely be inactive for Sunday, as they need more time than the week they had with the team to get up to speed.
“It will be tough, barring something unforeseen (for them to be active),” said Frazier. “Just too much ground to make up for the both of them.”
CB Antoine Winfield returned to practice, as expected, after tending to a family matter.
