Vince Young acknowledges that it will take some time before he becomes comfortable in the Bills offense.

“It’s up and down, up and down,” Young said of the learning process.

The Bills signed Young in May to add some insurance behind starter Ryan Fitzpatrick. Some speculated that Young could eventually push Fitzpatrick for the starting job, but that’s hardly been the case thus far. Fitzpatrick is the clear No. 1 QB, with Young and Tyler Thigpen vying for the No. 2 role.

Young struggled throughout the spring and got off to a slow start at training camp. At his first camp practice, two of his first three passes in 7-on-7 work were picked off. He’s begun to show some progress, however. At Sunday night’s practice session, he used a quick release to spring rookie T.J. Graham down the left sideline -- who raced down the field for a long touchdown.

“You’ve definitely got to have confidence in yourself but the biggest thing is making sure you know what’s going on, and that’s my whole thing right now,” Young said. “I’m just making sure I know where everybody’s at, if they have to adjust routes for certain coverages. ... but overall, playing the game, that’s the game you’ve been playing for a long time. Just go out there and have fun.”

“It is a tough offense to get,” Fitzpatrick said. “For him to come in, it was good to get the OTAs and minicamp, just like the rookies, to be able to digest it because it is a completely new system for him, new terminology. And that is not easy as a quarterback. ... as we get going here we will see how much he can process and how much he can retain that stuff that we learned back in the OTAs and carry it onto the field.

"But the thing that jumps out to you about him is he is a great athlete, obviously, and he is a guy that can really throw. He can spin the ball. So we will see as we go how his progress is. But I like helping those guys out. I am looking forward to seeing him compete and play.”

Even as Young works on his consistency, he’s still the clear favorite to land the primary backup job. Thigpen, last year’s No. 2 QB, has issues with his accuracy and faces an uphill battle to make the team.
