With his oftentimes acrimonious reign in Miami coming to an end Sunday when the Dolphins trading him to the Colts for a second-round and a conditional sixth-round draft pick, cornerback Vontae Davis looks at Indianapolis and sees a new chance.
“I feel like it’s a different opportunity,” Davis said, via the Indy Star. “What happened in Miami is in the past. Now I’m a Colt and my biggest thing is moving forward and trying to get better as a player.”
He’d be better off trying to forget his Dolphins days -- and for the record, CBSSports.com’s Pete Prisco likes the trade for Indianapolis.
Although he said last year that he and Sean Smith were the best cornerback tandem in the league, Davis was demoted to the nickel cornerback in training camp this season after Miami brought in free agent Richard Marshall. Last year, Davis also was tardy to practices, tangled with teammates and reportedly was hung over during practice.
Plus, Davis didn’t come off especially well on “Hard Knocks” when coach Joe Philbin made fun of his bladder size.
But Davis sees a fresh start in Indianapolis. He arrived Sunday and met with coaches and teammates that day. Coach Chuck Pagano expects Davis to be ready to start the season Sept. 9, and it’s a pretty good bet that he’ll move right into the starting lineup.
Davis’ past transgressions don’t seem to bother his new coach.
“We live in a great country,” Pagano said. “And this country is all about second chances.”
