The Washington Football Team is making a change at kicker. On Tuesday, the club announced that it has released veteran Dustin Hopkins, ending his seven-season run with the franchise. The 31-year-old originally signed with Washington back in 2015 after spending his first two seasons in the league with the Bills -- who drafted him in the sixth round in 2013 -- and Saints, respectively. In a corresponding move, Washington signed kicker Chris Blewitt from the practice squad.
Hopkins' run with Washington ends with him sitting third on the franchise's all-time scoring list, only looking up to Chip Lohmiller and Mark Moseley. He also has the most field goals made of 50-plus yards in team history.
This season, Hopkins is 12 of 14 on field goal attempts (85.7%) and 10 of 12 on extra points (83.3%). Last week against Kansas City, Hopkins missed a 42-yard field goal that would have extended Washington's lead to six points. After that miss, the Chiefs would go on a 21-0 run to win the game, 31-13.
As for Blewitt, the former Pitt kicker was last with the Chicago Bears back in the summer of 2019 and has yet to appear in an NFL game.
